The Beatles - This Boy
Written as a three-part harmony exercise, this song first appeared as the B-side for I Want to Hold Your Hand, and was released again as part of the Past Masters compilation, and a live version of the song is part of the Anthology 1.“This Boy was another hotel-bedroom song, twin beds, one afternoon somewhere; we had arrived around one o’clock. We had a couple of hours to kill, so we thought, Well, let’s write one. Rather like the hotel where we wrote She Loves You. It’s funny, I remember the room and the position of the beds: John and I sitting on twin beds, the G-Plan furniture, the British hotel with olive green and orange everywhere, that marvellous combination, the colours of vomit.” - Paul McCartney
The Beatles - Girl
“This was about a dream girl. When Paul and I wrote lyrics in the old days we used to laugh about it like the Tin Pan Alley people would. And it was only later on that we tried to match the lyrics to the tune. I like this one. It was one of my best.” - John Lennon
“It was always amusing to see if we could get a naughty word on the record: ‘fish and finger pie’, ‘prick teaser’, ‘tit tit tit tit’. The Beach Boys had a song out where they’d done ‘la la la la’ and we loved the innocence of that and wanted to copy it, but not use the same phrase. So we were looking around for another phrase, so it was ‘dit dit dit dit’, which we decided to change in our waggishness to ‘tit tit tit tit’, which is virtually indistinguishable from ‘dit dit dit dit’. And it gave us a laugh. It was to get some light relief in the middle of this real big career that we were forging. If we could put in something that was a little bit subversive then we would. George Martin might say, ‘Was that “dit dit” or “tit tit” you were singing?’ ‘Oh, “dit dit”, George, but it does sound a bit like that, doesn’t it?’ Then we’d get in the car and break down laughing.” - Paul McCartney

The Beatles - We Can Work It Out
“The lyrics might have been personal. It is often a good way to talk to someone or to work your own thoughts out. It saves you going to a psychiatrist, you allow yourself to say what you might not say in person.” - Paul McCartney
“In We Can Work It Out, Paul did the first half, I did the middle eight. But you’ve got Paul writing, ‘We can work it out, we can work it out’ - real optimistic, y’know, and me impatient: ‘Life is very short and there’s no time for fussing and fighting, my friend.’” - John Lennon

The Beatles throughout the years…
The Beatles - Oh! Darling
Paul solely composed this song but it’s credited to Lennon-McCartney. The working title for this song was “I’ll Never Do You No Harm.” It was issued as a single in Central America, with Maxwell’s Silver Hammer as its B-side.
“When we were recording ‘Oh! Darling’ I came into the studios early every day for a week to sing it by myself because at first my voice was too clear. I wanted it to sound as though I’d been performing it on stage all week.” - Paul McCartney
“‘Oh! Darling’ was a great one of Paul’s that he didn’t sing too well. I always thought I could have done it better—it was more my style than his. He wrote it, so what the hell, he’s going to sing it.” - John Lennon
